Psychosexual Therapy Qualifications

Diploma in Clinical Sexology & Relationship Therapy – Contemporary Institute of Clinical Sexology

The course covers the combined bio-psycho-social dimensions of sexual and relationship health and wellbeing. It has been designed to ensure that, by the end of the programme, our graduates have a solid foundation of comprehensive knowledge and skills for confident therapeutic practice with psychosexual and relationship problems.

Gender, sexual, relationship and cultural diversity are fully integrated into all aspects of the course.

The therapeutic theoretical orientation of the course is “pluralism”. Pluralism is an emerging way of thinking about therapy, based on the fundamental assumption that no one therapeutic approach has the monopoly on understanding the causes of distress or on the most helpful therapeutic responses. Instead, it suggests that different clients are likely to want, and benefit from, different things in therapy.  We teach a range of contemporary approaches to therapy, to best serve each unique client, whilst maintaining the centrality of the client, relational working and research based practice.

Professional Certificate in Psychosexual Therapy – Contemporary Institute of Clinical Sexology

The CICS Professional Certificate in Psychosexual Therapy provides specialist training in working with sexual problems for qualified and practicing counsellors, couples therapists, psychologists and medical professionals. We combine a bio-psycho-social approach with the theoretical framework of pluralism. Pluralism is based on the view that no one therapeutic approach can resolve all client presentations and that different clients are likely to want, and benefit from, different interventions in therapy.

Certificate in the Study of the Couple Relationship Therapy – Tavistock Relationships

The course explores the central theoretical concepts of psychoanalytical couple therapy for people who want to understand more about the world of couple relationships.

Participants have time and space to reflect together upon the nature of working with couples and the couple’s relationship.

TR is a world centre of excellence for couple and individual psychotherapy training and the teaching staff for this course are active therapists experienced in working within the TR setting.

Biography

About Me

Welcome! I’m Milton, a compassionate and experienced psychotherapist specialising in psychosexual and couples/relationship therapy. With over 10 years in the mental health field, I am dedicated to helping individuals and couples navigate the complexities of relationships, sexuality, and personal growth in a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment.

My approach is informed by my diverse professional background, extensive training, and deep understanding of minorities and cultural awareness. I have had the privilege of working with clients from a wide range of economic, social, gender, sexuality, sexual orientations and cultural backgrounds, fostering emotional growth and facilitating meaningful, lasting change.

Professional Experience

  • Private Practice: For several years, I have run my private practice, Milton Sattler Therapy, where I support clients in building awareness, emotional resilience, healthier relationships and personal growth.
  • LGBTQ+ and GSRD Focus: I worked at the East London Out Project (ELOP), providing psychodynamic counselling to LGBTQ+ clients, and I continue to offer affirming care to those navigating gender, sexuality, and relationship diversity. I also worked as an honorary counsellor with the Albany Trust, the unique long-term psychoanalytical service specialising in issues surrounding gender, identity, sexuality, and relationships.
  • NHS and Community Settings: My experience includes working as a psychodynamic counsellor at The Law Medical Group Practice
  • Specialist Volunteering: I worked as a CBT practitioner and psychodynamic psychotherapist at the Cassel Centre, where I supported clients referred through NHS services, local organizations and students from Goldsmith College.
  • Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist: I have been working on my Private Practice since 2023 with clients who were looking for psychosexual therapy and couples therapy for sexual and relationship issues. I started in 2024 to volunteer for the NHS Lewisham Trust – Waldron Sexual Health Clinic. At the clinic I see patients from different gender and sexual orientation who were referred to the clinic because of the different presentation of pain in penetration, relationship issues, Unreliable erections, trauma and sexual trauma.

Areas of Expertise

  • Psychosexual therapy for challenges such as painful penetration, erectile dysfunction, and mismatched libido.
  • Relationship therapy for couples and individuals exploring intimacy, communication, and relational dynamics.
  • Support for LGBTQ+ clients and those questioning their gender or sexual identity.
  • Navigating life transitions, neurodivergent, and mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues.
  • Neurodivergent: I understand that neurodivergent is part of the diverse ways people think, feel, and process the world around them. I approach neurodivergent with respect and empathy, acknowledging that it brings both unique strengths and distinct challenges. My Neurodivergent-Affirmative Therapy is tailored to meet these complexities, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals feel seen, heard, and supported in their personal, familial, and relational dynamics.

Testimonials

WS (He/They)

“I came to therapy at a very confusing and uncertain time in my life, struggling with my gender identity and a lot more unresolved trauma than I was aware of. Working with Milton over the past two and a half years has been great! Due to my experiences in life, I’d developed issues around trust and intimacy, and over our time together, Milton’s helped me to learn and trust in our relationship, which has helped me to grow and to trust in others.

Because of this, I’ve been able to cultivate new relationships and friendships in my life and to help heal old relationships, like with my family. I feel so much more grounded now, both in my life and in myself. This has given me the space to work through a lot of the issues from my childhood and to understand where my problems with trust and intimacy came from. It’s also given me the space to explore and examine my gender identity.

I just feel like more of a whole person, really, and I’m beyond grateful to Milton and the warmth and kindness he’s shown me in working together because I don’t think I would have been able to get here without his help.”

AC (He/Him)

“Thank you, Milton, for a life-changing journey which enabled me to explore and love myself more.

With the help of CBT, psychodynamic and psychosexual therapy, I have been able to heal from trauma that held me back and overcome a number of my anxieties.

Moving forward, I feel confident that the tools I have gathered during my therapeutic journey will help me deal with the different feelings and emotions I will encounter during the course of my life.”

JC (She/Her)

“I felt my sessions were very useful and have changed my life. I started my sessions not knowing how to cope with my feelings or understanding how to deal with my emotions. It was a very safe space where I could open up and totally be myself.

I had never had therapy like this before, so was not sure what to expect. I learnt so much about myself and was given strategies to use when I felt I needed support outside of my sessions. I now understand more about therapy and its benefits that I have recommended it to family and friends. I would use therapy again if I needed it.

I can now start a new phase of my life with a better foundation and new skills to carry me forward. Thank you for all your support during a difficult time in my life when I was feeling very low and needed self-esteem and confidence to live the life I should be living.”

CH (They/He)

“I’ve been working with Milton as my therapist for just under four years now. I’ve really enjoyed working together and found the experience really beneficial for my life. Very consistently, therapy has helped inform me to make different and better choices in my relationships with my friends, family, and partners but ultimately with myself.

Milton is a great listener and observer—he knows when and how much to challenge, uses humour, and has a very humanising and non-judgmental approach, which I’ve appreciated so much.”

“If you’d like to explore how therapy can support your journey, feel free to contact me for an initial free consultation.”

My Journey

Originally from Brazil, I moved to the UK in the late 1990s and began my formal training as a therapist in 2010. My academic journey included a Foundation Degree, BSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and CBT, and MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Discovering my own neurodivergence during my studies was a pivotal moment. It deepened my self-understanding and enhanced my ability to empathize with clients facing similar challenges.

Before transitioning into psychotherapy, I spent nine years teaching History in a township community, where I gained firsthand insight into the impact of race, class, and cultural inequities. These experiences continue to inform my work, ensuring that my practice is inclusive and attuned to the nuances of each client’s lived experience.

Types of Therapy Used

Therapy Brief Psychodynamic Therapy focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in the client's present behaviour. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are the client's self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behaviour. It enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to abuse substances. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behaviour. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are a client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behaviour. In its brief form, a psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to abuse substances. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It is a "problem-focused" and "action-oriented" form of therapy, meaning it is used to treat specific problems related to some diagnosed mental conditions. Psychosexual Therapy & Sex Therapy Are you having a hard time reconciling your more exotic desires with the messages of disapproval that you may have heard from society? It is common for people to have a problem with sex at some point in their life. Sexual problems can cause a lot of distress and unhappiness in people. A sex therapist will listen to you describe your problems and assess whether the cause is likely to be psychological, physical or a combination of the two. Intimate Partners Therapy (IPT) & Relationship Therapy In IPT, I work to preserve the delicate equilibrium between you and your partner while facilitating an open and constructive dialogue. I’ll aim to cultivate a respectful and secure environment where both of you can comfortably express your thoughts and feelings, ensuring your voices are heard and understood by each other.
