Chronic Pelvic Pain in Men – A Much-Needed Perspective

We’re excited to be offering a training on Chronic Pelvic Pain in Men: Tools and Insights from Occupational Therapy this September. This session responds directly to a gap identified by Jo Coker AccCOSRT(Sen) AccCOSRT (Sup) MBPsS FCOSRT Counselling Psychologist and COSRT Director of Therapy and Training Standards, and Tim Blackstone, COSRT Accredited psychosexual therapist and registered clinical supervisor and former COSRT Trustee both of whom recommended COSRT explore this area due to its significant implications for psychosexual and relationship work.

Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS) in men is a complex and often misunderstood condition. This training introduces a biopsychosocial and sensory lens—particularly the role of interoception—to help therapists better understand how pain, stress, sexual function, and emotional processing intersect. It will offer practical tools, such as psychoeducation on the pain cycle and the fight/flight/freeze/fawn response, as well as insights into the ways intimate partners can either support or compound pain experiences.

“Chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a common presentation in clinical Psychosexual Therapy practice that can be complex to treat because of lack of in depth understanding of causal and maintaining factors. It’s fantastic to see training that brings in new clinical perspectives, like those from Occupational Therapy, to expand therapists’ understanding and practical skillset which will benefit service users”

Jo Coker AccCOSRT(Sen) AccCOSRT (Sup) MBPsS FCOSRT. Counselling Psychologist Director of Therapy and Training Standards at COSRT.

“Nikki Craig brought fresh insight during her placement in our sexual health service, exploring how Occupational Therapy interventions can support men with CPPS—something COSRT therapists are increasingly encountering. Her work bridges mental and sexual health beautifully, and I’m thrilled it’s now forming the basis of this specialist training. It’s a vital topic, and I’d strongly encourage therapists to attend”.

Tim Blackstone, COSRT Accredited psychosexual therapist and registered clinical supervisor and former COSRT Trustee.

We are proud to have responded to the needs identified by our leadership. If this is a subject close to your practice or interest, we encourage you to join us and help ensure this vital topic gets the attention it deserves.
