This study day will examine the nature of domestic violence and abuse and its impact on couple relationships. Drawing on systemic, psychoanalytic and attachment based approaches, frameworks for understanding the dynamic nature of couple relationships that give rise to violence and abuse will be explored. Limits in thinking about the victim and perpetrator divide will be discussed and developments in therapy with couples in relationships in which there is violence and abuse will be advanced.

The workshop will also consider differences between same-sex and heterosexual couple relationships and will examine the more extreme forms of sexual violence and abuse.

Learning Outcomes

Following this workshop, participants will come to:

  • Know about the typologies of violence and the limits of the victim and perpetrator divide
  • Understand the nature of violence and abuse within couple relationships, including sexual abuse and violence
  • Be able to think about the differences concerning same-sex and straight couple violent and abusive relationships
  • Know about developments in thinking and working with couples in which there is violence and abuse

Presented by, Damian McCann, D.Sys.Psych., a couple psychoanalytic psychotherapist working as Head of Learning and Development at Tavistock Relationships. He is also a consultant systemic psychotherapist working in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and is an Associate of Pink Therapy where he teaches on the Diploma in Relationship Therapy for Gender and Sexual Diversities. He has a particular interest in working with same-sex couples and his doctoral research was concerned with understanding the meaning and impact of violence in the couple relationships of gay men. He has published and taught widely on working with couples in which there is violence and abuse.

Terms and Conditions

The full fee for each training day is £115 for COSRT members and £125 for non-members. Cheques should be made payable to COSRT in GB pounds sterling. Payment must be received by COSRT before the training day. Confirmation and details of your booking will be emailed to you.

Cancellations must be made in writing. There is an administrative charge of £20 per person for cancellations received up to six weeks prior to the training day. Thereafter no refund is possible. To substitute a delegate please call the COSRT office (020 8543 2707) at least seven days prior to the event.

COSRT reserves the right to change the venue or speakers due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event of a training day being cancelled, a full refund will be made, but COSRT disclaims any further liability.
