CPD Hours six

Every relationship, including the relationship between therapist and client, involves power dynamics. Power and related control issues can also be core themes in how people gain pleasure and satisfaction from sex, and also when sexual behaviour becomes compulsive, problematic and abusive. The day will explore power dynamics from different angles. By the end of the day, participants should have raised awareness of the following.

Learning outcomes

  • Raised awareness of influence of power dynamics in relationships
  • Raised awareness of how therapist’s own experiences of power can impact on work with clients
  • Raised awareness of non-abusive and abusive functional use of power in sex, including BDSM, paraphilias and compulsive sexual behaviour
  • Raised awareness of working therapeutically with power in sessions with clients

He was awarded a PhD by Cardiff University in 2010 for research on strengths-based approaches to sex offending, and is a regular contributor to journals and books. He is a qualified probation officer and counsellor, a registered member of the BACP and a member of ATSAC (Association for the Treatment of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity). In addition, he regularly trains counsellors and therapists to work with individuals posing a sexual risk, for StopSO (Specialist Treatment Organisation for the Prevention of Sexual Offending). He has his own counselling and training practice (www.andrewhowardsmith.uk), maintaining a dual client base of individuals who have sexual offending problems and clients who present with sexual addiction and compulsivity difficulties. His book, Counselling Male Sexual Offenders: A strengths-Focused Approach, was published by Routledge in November 2017.
