This day is for therapists and students from a variety of modalities who see couples and individuals with relationship and sexual difficulties and do not respond to a straightforward CBT treatment. From the moment we are born we seek to relate to others. The experiences gained from these early relationships are internalised and define, in one way or another, the way we relate to others subsequently. Relational experiences in childhood, adolescence and adulthood all impact on the way we choose and relate to a partner at both conscious and unconscious levels. This day explores the development of Object Relations Theory and considers the way it can deepen our understanding of the clients we see.

The aims of this course are:

  • To provide an overview of the development of Object Relations Theory
  • To examine the impact Object Relations may have at different stages in the life cycle
  • To consider the role of the internal couple unconscious in partner choice
  • To deepen our understanding of presenting problems in the couple relationship and sexual interaction

Objectives

When working with couples and individuals presenting with relationship and sexual difficulties the delegate will be able to:

  • Identify underlying and sometimes unconscious issues and conflicts, which are impacting on current difficulties.
  • Consider some of the transference, countertransference and projective systems in action between the couple and in the therapeutic situation
  • Use sensate focus and other behavioural interventions together with an understanding of Object Relations to reveal the deeper conflicts troubling individuals and couples
  • Be aware of the possible impact of earlier experiences, often in childhood, subsequent relationships

Presented by Jane Seymour MA, COSRT Accred, UKCP Reg.
Following an early career as a stage manager Jane spent two years as a Childline counsellor. As a result of this experience she decided she that wanted to work with parents and couples. In 1996 she qualified as a couples counsellor with the London Marriage Guidance Council. Jane subsequently trained as a psychosexual therapist and went on to complete an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies. Following the transfer of London Marriage Guidance to Tavistock Relationships she became the first Programme Head for the MSc in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy. She has stepped down from this role but continues her involvement with TCCR as a trainer and supervisor. On behalf of Tavistock Relationships Jane has delivered the Certificate in Psychosexual Studies for therapists in Turkey.

She believes it is important that therapists are trained to be comfortable and well informed when working with the sexual relationship. She would like to see psychosexual therapy more widely available and easily accessible to clients.

Jane has also presented training for a range of organizations including Relate, BUPA, Academy of Live and Dramatic Arts and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She works as a therapist and supervisor in private practice in South London.
